- Typically, Austrians ask ‘How are you?’ (‘Wie geht es Ihnen?’) when they wish to hear a detailed account of their counterpart’s well-being. It is not a habitual greeting. For this reason, Austrians can be confused and may view their counterpart as insincere when people from the English-speaking West ask them this question without paying in-depth attention to the answer.
