- Smoking in enclosed public places is illegal. If you wish to smoke, avoid lighting your cigarette indoors and only smoke in designated areas.
- The primary focus of this cultural profile is the Republic of Ireland, rather than Northern Ireland (a region part of the United Kingdom). The two areas have been separated from one another for almost 100 years, which began with the Irish War of Independence (1919-1921). The near-100 years of separation have resulted in diverging patterns of national cultural development, which is evident through language, dialect, accent, religion, politics, sport and music.
- Northern Irish identity is both culturally and legally complex. A person from Northern Ireland can legally be a citizen of either the United Kingdom, or Ireland, or both. Thus, when referring to someone, it is best to refer to them as Northern Irish or as being from Northern Ireland.
- In some sporting contexts, Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland may play together as a single all-island team. This is especially the case in both rugby and cricket. However, football (soccer) is played separately with Northern Irish residents having the choice to represent either the Republic of Ireland, or the team representing the United Kingdom.
