1 This day commemorates the signing of the treaty between the British Crown and many Māori chiefs at Waitangi on 6th February, 1840.
2 Matariki is the Māori name for the Pleiades star constellation that rises in New Zealand mid-winter (sometime between June-July). It marks the beginning of the new year in the Māori lunar calendar and is an important date and celebration.
